West Hollywood, Los Angeles County
The Sunset Strip runs for about a mile and a half through West Hollywood. Because the area lay outside the Los Angeles city limits, nightclubs flourished there from the 1920s on. The Whisky a Go Go opened in 1964 and helped launch the Doors, and the Roxy and the Rainbow followed in the 1970s. The Troubadour, a few blocks south, has been presenting new songwriters since 1957.
